Sull'ultimo numero di Pagaiando, il primo del 2011 e forse uno degli ultimi ad essere spedito ai soci in formato cartaceo, è stato pubblicato anche il nostro breve racconto del viaggio invernale ad Ibiza&Formentera.

E' un numero di respiro internazionale, con articoli da Tanzania, Cile, Francia e Venezia, e vale la pena di aggiungerlo alla biblioteca del buon canoista...

Ibiza mundo activo

Se un giorno vorrete visitare l'isola di Ibiza, contattate "Ibiza Mundo Activo"!

Mentre eravamo lì in kayak, abbiamo incontrato uno di loro a Cala Portixol: noi facevamo una breve pausa tra gli scivoli di legno delle casupole dei pescatori, ben ordinate in una caletta riparata di spettacolare bellezza, lui passava di là zaino in spalla e racchette da escursionismo in mano, un occhio al GPS per la traccia del nuovo sentiero... dalle poche frasi scambiate, con la solita attrazione che avvicina gli appassionati di uno stesso sport, Domingo ci è sembrato un profondo conoscitore della sua terra ed un grande amante delle attività all'aria aperta: con Beatriz gestiscono una scuola di kayak (e non solo) e noleggiano l'attrezzatura necessaria per la scoperta dell'isola dal mare.

Approfittatene, ne vale davvero la pena, specie se nel giro riuscite ad inserire anche Formentera!

When we were there in kayak, we've met one of them in Cala Portixol, one of the most beautiful bay in the island; we were eating beetwen the wooden slides of the tipical fishermen boats house, he was walking there around to realize a new way for his clients.

We've spoke a bit and we've felt in him that strong feeling for his land and that great passion for all the natural activities: Domingo and Beatriz manage a sea kayak school (and more) and they can rent you all the equipment you need to paddle around Ibiza.

Try to do that, expecially if you have enough time to visit Formentera too, it surely will be an unforgetable adventure!

Nostalgia por las Pitiusas

Ahi, que nostalgia que tenemos por las Pitiusas!!!
Per alleviare un pò i sintomi, talora alquanto gravi e assai preoccupanti, abbiamo rimesso mano al blog, che durante il viaggio ci ha fatto penare non poco, aggiungendo traduzioni e foto...
Ma non è stato sufficiente: abbiamo ancora una gran voglia di mare!!!

To alleviate the symptoms, some days very serious and worrying, we have update the blog, quite impossibile during the journey, adding translations and photos...
But it was not enough: we still have a great desire of sea!

Home, sweet home

Siamo rientrati ieri e già soffriamo di nostalgia acuta per Franco, le sue battute, la sua saggezza e la sua strepitosa pasta e fagioli, aromatizzata con il rosmarino delle isole.
Allo sbarco a Barcellona abbiamo ritrovato gli amici di sempre, Carme e Santi: colazione al porto con racconti del viaggio tra boccadillos, caffè e progetti futuri...
Il rientro a casa non poteva essere più grigio: pioggia, freddo e frigorifero vuoto.
Dopo la settima lavatrice, lavare la tenda in terrazzo non è stato piacevole, con le temperature scese di colpo di 15 gradi: ad ogni passata di spazzolone, però, ho ripercorso idealmente le tappe del viaggio: la prima notte a Cala Boix, poi Cala d'en Serra, Cala Benirràs, Cala Salada, il Capodanno a Cala d'Hort ed infine la lunga spiaggia dorata di Ses Salines prima di traversare su Formentera, il vero gioiello delle Baleari.

Lavando il telo superiore ho rivisitato le sue cale, Ses Plagetses, Es Arenals e Cala Saona e quando ho steso tutto ad asciugare ho dedicato ancora qualche minuto a Espalmador, l'isola dell'ultima notte.

Mauro ha aggiornato la mappa del viaggio ed ora il link raggiungibile dal blog dedicato ad Ibiza e Formentera riporta le date ed i nomi delle spiagge che ci hanno ospitato negli undici giorni di periplo delle Isole Pitiuse.

Il viaggio continua anche quando si è ormai concluso e la mente corre ancora veloce al mare caldo delle Baleari... e leggiamo finalmente il bel post del nostro viaggio sul blog della Kokatat.

We came back yesterday and both suffer with an acute nostalgia for Franco, his jokes, his wisdom and his amazing pasta and beans, flavored with the islands' rosemary.
Landing in Barcelona we found old friends, Carme and Santi: breakfast at the port with chats and boccadillos, coffee and future projects...

The arrive at home could not be more gray: rain, cold and an empty refrigerator.

After the seventh washing machine, wash the tent on the terrace was not pleasant, with temperatures suddenly dropped to 15 degrees. However, with each pass of the scrubber, I ideally went through the stages of the journey, the first night at Cala Boix, then at Cala d'en Serra, Cala Benirràs, Cala Salada, Cala d'Hort in the New Year and finally the long golden beach of Ses Salines, before to cross to Formentera, the jewel of the Balearic Islands.

Washing the tent I revisited its bays and beaches, Ses Plagetses, Es Arenals and Cala Saona; when I laid everything out to dry, I spent a few minutes in Espalmador, the island of the last night.

Mauro has updated the map of the trip and now the link up on the blog shows the dates and names of the beaches where we "leave" during the eleven-day circumnavigation of thePitiuse Islands.

The trip continues even when it has been completed and the fantasy still runs faster to the Balearics warm sea... and finally we read the post of our trip on the Kokatat blog!

Espalmador: the smallest island

Prima di lasciare Formentera ci concediamo una sosta al porto di La Savina: sbarchiamo poco oltre la rastrelliera che sostiene decine di sit-on-top della scuola di kayak (di vela, catamarano e surf) del posto e seguiamo le indicazioni di un pescatore che dalla sua bella vela latina ci consiglia di mangiare nel bar del centro. E' un locale demodè in cui gli unici addobbi natalizi sono due festoni rossi attaccati con il nastro adesivo alle vetrate dell'ingresso: ci servono i migliori bocadillos delle Baleari e la cameriera ci offre tre caraquillos, caffè corretti al rum. "Stiamo facendo il giro delle isole in kayak", le diciamo: "Kayak? lo que es esto?" ci chiede e quando capisce che non siamo vestiti da sommozzatori nè da velisti comincia a raccontarlo agli altri avventori del locale...
Approfittando delle ottime previsioni meteo, abbiamo scelto di accorciare le tappe per pagaiare fino all'ultimo giorno e ci stupiamo ancora che il vento ci stia seguendo fedele nel nostro giro intorno alle isole: non ci è mai capitato di fare un viaggio con il vento sempre in poppa per tanti giorni consecutivi.

Abbiamo completato il periplo di Ibiza in 6 giorni, quello di Formentera in 4 e così ci siamo potuti permettere di esplorare anche la più piccola delle isole dell'arcipelago, S'Espalmador, che insieme ad Espardell poco lontanta occupa lo stretto di Freo tra le isole maggiori.

L'ultima notte abbiamo tutta l'isola per noi, con la sua torre saracena e la sua finca bianca: Espalmador è il cuore della riserva marina che abbraccia le saline di Ibiza e Formentera e che si estende alle dune costiere di tutte le isole; palizzate e passerelle di legno proteggono le dune, la vegetazione e le zone di nidificazione e tutte le spiagge ci sono sembrate molto pulite e ben curate.

La mattina del 6 gennaio ci svegliamo come sempre alle 6 ed assistiamo ad una aurora incredibilmente lenta e sanguigna che gustiamo insieme al caffè caldo e ai biscotti al miele della prima colazione, finchè il sole non sorge tra le dune e ci spinge a riprendere il mare per gli ultimi 20 km fino al porto di Eivissa: la seconda traversata dello stretto più pericoloso del Mediterraneo ci offre l'occasione di ripassare i segnali cardinali delle boe luminose, di correggere lo scarroccio e di esercitarci sulla navigazione stimata. Franco trova molte analogie con le sue uscite in montagna e ci spiega che le tecniche di orientamento non sono poi tanto dissimili, visto che il mare e la neve sono due stati diversi dello stesso elemento, l'acqua.

Lo scivolo del Club nautico ci accoglie dopo 11 giorni di navigazione ed il ragazzo della guardiola ci apre le docce calde e ci tiene i kayak in custodia fino alla partenza del traghetto, prevista per la mezzanotte, un orario per noi ormai insostenibile, dopo tante giornate concluse invariabilmente alle 20... sarà un lungo viaggio di ritorno, con le immagini delle Isole Pitiuse negli occhi e nel cuore!

Before leaving Formentera we stop at La Savina: landing just beyond the rack that supports dozens of sit-on-top of the local school (sailing, catamaran, surf and kayak).
We want to eat in a fisherman tavern and we find it near the center: it's a démodé pub where the Christmas decorations are two red streamers attached to the windows with a simple tape; we eat there the best bocadillos of the Balearic Islands and the waitress gives us three caraquillos, coffee laced with rum. "We are paddling around the islands by kayak", we say: "Kayak? Lo que es esto?" and when she understand that we are not dressed as scuba divers nor sailors, than begins to tell the story to the other patrons of the restaurant...

Taking advantage of good weather, we decided to shorten the stages to paddle until the last day and we're surprised that the wind is following us faithful in our tour around the islands: this is the first time we paddle with the wind always downwind for many consecutive days.

We have completed the circumnavigation of Ibiza in 6 days, Formentera in 4 and so we could afford to explore even the smallest islands of the archipelago, s'Espalmador, which together with Espardell occupie the little narrow between the islands, called Freo narrow. The last night we have the island all for us, with its Saracen tower and its white finca: Espalmador is the heart of the marine reserve, which covers the salt place of Ibiza and Formentera and the coastal dunes of the both islands; fences and wooden walkways to protect the dunes, the vegetation and the nesting areas and all beaches are very clean and seemed well cared during the year.

On the morning of January 6, as always, we wake up at 6 and we see a sunrise incredibly slow and blood, that we enjoy with hot coffee and biscuits and honey for breakfast, until the last 20 km to the port of Ibiza: the second crossing of the most dangerous narrow of the Mediterranean gives us the opportunity to pass its cardinal signs, to correct the drift and practice on coastal navigation.

Franco finds many similarities with its outputs in the mountains and explains us that the safe technics are not so dissimilar, as the sea and snow are two different states of the same element, the water.

Finally, the slide of the Sailing Club in Eivissa welcomes us after 11 days and the boy's gatehouse opens us hot showers! Above all, he allow us to leave the kayak there until the departure of the ferry, scheduled for midnight, a time for us no longer sustainable, after so many days invariably ended with 20... it will be a long journey to came back home, with the immages of the Pitiuse Islands in the eyes and into the heart!

Last days in Formentera!

Due promotori in due giorni: prima quello de La Mola, con i suoi 148 metri di altezza e le nocche di un pugno chiuso proteso verso il mare aperto, poi quello de La Barbaria, con la sua settecentesca torre di avvistamento a due piani ed il Faro affacciato sulla fine del mondo...
Due pagaiate splendide in due giornate ricche di sole, risate e divertimento.
L'imbarco dalla caletta incastonata nella roccia di Es Calò è stato un pò spumeggiante per via dei frangenti che coprivano lo scivolo di legno ricavato tra gli scogli; poi il vento ha coperto il sole di nuvoloni grigi ma girato il capo ci ha spinto per bene, facendoci testare ancora il nuovo kayak e le vecchie capacità di pagaiata; quando stavamo ormai pensando di rinunciare all'abbronzatura fuori stagione, un sole caldo ed insistente ci ha accompagnato fino allo sbarco.
Abbiamo steso TUTTO ad asciugare ed in un batti baleno la tettoia del ristorante di Es Arenals si è riempita di sacchi a pelo, materassini, tende, giacche, pantaloni e calzini ancora umidi dall'ultima notte, la più fredda e "bagnata" del viaggio.
Una vicina taverna ci ha fornito la birra per la cena, con l'accordo di restituire i vuoti prima di ripartire l'indomani, e Franco sfodera una delle sue migliori battute: "Mauro, accedi la televisione che alle 18 danno il tramonto sul mare"!
Notte stellata con le tende montate proprio sotto la luminosa costellazione di Cassiopea.
Un boxer coccolone ci tiene compagnia a colazione e ci guarda andare via.
Anche il secondo imbarco è stato un pò spumeggiante e fino all'ora di pranzo abbiamo costeggiato la lunga serie di dune tra i due promontori dell'isola, in questo periodo completamente deserte, nonostante la presenza sonnacchiosa dei locali tanto famosi e affollati in estate.
Poi ci sono toccate due ore contro vento, ognuno con una propria rotta personale, probabilmente seguendo il filo dei rispettivi pensieri: così, chi al largo, chi vicino alla costa rocciosa e chi proprio sotto la parete punteggiata di gabbiani, abbiamo raggiunto Cap de Barbaria... dopo un'altra ora di pagaiata impegnativa ma divertente, tra una lavatrice da picchi verticali alti mezzo metro ed una costante onda al giardinetto che ci fa filare diritti verso la meta, abbiamo raggiunto il nostro campo a Cala Saona e sotto l'ennesima provvidenziale tettoia abbiamo issato le tende per l'ultima notte su Formentera.
Domani, se le previsioni manterranno le promesse, con lo stesso vento teso da SW a 10-18 nodi, raggiungeremo prima il Porto di La Savina per il pranzo (speriamo in un locale di pescatori!) e poi l'isolotto di Espalmador per l'ultima tappa del viaggio...

Two splendid paddles in two rich days of sun, laughters and fun.
We start from Es Calò with a bit foamy and breaking waves that covered the wooden slide realized among the rocky coast; then the wind has covered the sun of grey clouds but when we turned the head it has pushed us, just to test again the new kayak and our old paddling abilities; when we were thinking about renouncing the tan season, a warm and insistent sun has accompanied us up to the unloading.
We have stretched Everything to dry and in a flash the roofing of the Es Arenals restaurant is still filled with sleeping bags, tents, jackets, pants and socks, so wet from the last night, the coldest of the trip. A near tavern has furnished us the beer for the dinner, according to return the voids before leaving the next day, and Franco unsheathes one of his best wisecracks: "Mauro, turn on the television, the program at 18 is the sunset on the sea!"

Also the second day there was a bit foamy and up to the time of lunch we've coasted along the long series of dunes among the two promontories of the island, in this period completely desert, despite the presence of the so famous and crowded places in the summer.
Then two hours against wind, each of us with an own personal rout, probably following the thread of the respective thoughts: this way, who offshore, who next to the rocky coast and who really under the punctuated wall of gulls, we have reached Cap de Barbaria... after an hour of binding and amusing paddle, among a washer from woodpeckers vertical tall half meter and a constant wave to the quarter that makes us rights toward the destination, we has reached Cala Saona and under another providential roofing we have set up the tents for the last night in Formentera.
Tomorrow, if the forecasts will keep the promises, with the same SW wind to 10-18 knots, we will reach first La Savina harbour for the lunch time (hopefully in a fishermen tavern!) and then the islet of Espalmador for the last night of the trip...

Paddling around Formentera

Il nuovo anno non poteva cominciare in modo migliore: un sole timido quanto fugace illumina la nostra prima pagaiata!
Dopo giorni di cielo plumbeo che ha tinto il mare calmo del grigio intenso delle sue nuvole paffute, che bagnano solo un paio di volte le nostre prue, il raggio di sole mattutino viene accolto da tutti noi con entusiasmo e ci invita a raggiungere subito le isole di Es Vedrà e Es Vedranell poco al largo della costa.
Proseguiamo poi lungo uno dei tratti più belli di Ibiza, sotto scogliere di arenaria lavorate dall'acqua e dal vento che si tingono d'oro quando il sole fa capolino tra le nuvole; riflessi d'ambra colorano i fondali di Cala Lentrisca, una baia riparata raggiungibile solo dal mare o con un impervio sentiero tra la macchia, dove un pescatore solitario lavora con fatica per ripulire lo scivolo di legno dai ciottoli e dalla posidonia depositati con l'ultima mareggiata in cumuli giganteschi proprio di fronte alle semplici e tipiche baracche ibizenche per i gozzi da pesca... altre barche sono ormeggiate nella baia ed il loro dolce rollio allieta la nostra sosta.
Siamo stati fortunati a trovare un tempo tanto clemente, un poco freddo ed umido ma senza onde; per la prima volta da quando viaggiamo in kayak, poi, ci capita di essere sempre inseguiti da un venticello gentile che ci sospinge in avanti, cambiando direzione man mano che noi giriamo intorno all'isola: deve essere una sorta di risarcimento che la Natura ci vuole offrire dopo il furto subito a Barcellona.
Con una lenta e lunga pagaiata ci portiamo verso le saline e pernottiamo sotto una delle sette torri saracene dell'isola, quella più meridionale; assistiamo ammirati ad una festa di luci notturne: quelle in movimento dei traghetti che incrociano al largo, quelle tremolanti di Formentera in lontananza, quelle gialle del molo di attracco del sale che fa bella mostra di se in ordinate montagnole luccicanti e quelle bianche intermittenti dei fari e delle luci che segnalano le isole, gli isolotti e le secche dello stretto di Freo tra Ibiza e Formentera, uno degli stretti più pericolosi del Mediterraneo.
Lo affrontiamo la mattina seguente con totale sprezzo del pericolo, sfidando un mare... calmo con onde da 5 cm e vento inesistente!
Raggiungere l'isolotto intermedio di Espalmador in una giornata di sole pieno è un vero godimento: l'acqua trasparente pulita dalla posidonia si colora di tutte le gradazioni possibili dal bianco argenteo al blu cobalto e le ondine irriverenti che si formano sui bassi fondali della lunga penisola sabbiosa all'estremità settentrionale di Formentera ci divertono e ci invitano ad una seconda sosta.
La costa rocciosa e scoscesa oltre il paesino turistico ed ora deserto di Es Pujols ci regala un paio d'ore di pagaiate a ritmo lento e ci fa capire ancora una volta che la terra vista dal mare è molto più bella: Formentera l'avevo scoperta in bicicletta qualche anno fa, ma circumnavigarla in kayak ci permette di scovare ora angoli nascosti di sorprendete bellezza.
Sbarchiamo dopo 25 km che è quasi notte nella spiaggetta di sabbia fine incastonata tra gli scogli piatti e scuri di Es Calò, un paesino cresciuto intorno al ricovero delle barche dei pescatori proprio ai piedi del promontorio della Mola: una ciprea mi aspetta sulla battigia e stelle cadenti coronano la nostra cena!
Formentera ci ha riservato la prima giornata di sole del viaggio e ci ha regalato una pagaiata davvero indimenticabile.

The new year could not start in a best way: a timid sun illuminates our first paddle!
After days of leaden sky that have dyed the calm sea of the intense grey of its chubby clouds, that bathe a couple of times our bows, the ray of early-morning sun is welcomed by all of us with enthusiasm and invites us immediately to reach the islands of Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell, few offshore the coast.
We continue then along one of the most beautiful coast of Ibiza, under bluffs of sandstone worked by the water and the wind, that they are dyed of gold when the sun appears among the clouds; amber reflexes the backdrops of Cala Lentrisca, an sheltered bay attainable only from the sea or with an impervious path among the stain, where a solitary fisherman works to take off form the wood slide the pebbles and the posidonia deposited with the last sea storm in gigantic heaps really in front of the simple and typical huts for the fishing gullets... other boats are moored in the bay and their dessert rolling cheers our standstill.
We have been lucky to find so much clement weather, a little cold and dampness but without waves; for the first time turned since we travelled in kayak, a kind breezepushes us evedy day, changing direction as soon as we turn around the island: it must be a sort of reimbursement that the Nature takes to us after the theft in Barcellona.
A slow and long paddle brings us toward the salt pans and we sleep under one of the seven Saracen towers of the island, the most southern; we assist admired to a nighttime lights party: those in movement of the ferries that cross offshore, those trembling in distance coming from Formentera, those yellow of the salt docks of and those intermittent whites of the lighthouses of the islands, the islets and the shoals of the Freo narrow, between Ibiza and Formentera, one of the most dangerous narrow of the Mediterranean.
Let's face it with total scorn of the danger the following morning, challenging a sea... calm with no waves and nonexistent wind!
Reach the intermediary islet of Espalmador in a day of full sun is a true enjoyment: the transparent water cleaned by the posidonia becomes flushed of all the possible gradations from the silvery white to the blue cobalt; the disrespectful little waves formed on the low backdrops of the long sandy peninsula to the northern extremity of Formentera invite us to a second stop.
The rocky and steep coast over the tourist village called Es Pujols, now in winter desert and close, gives us a couple of hours of slow paddle and makes us understand once more time that the earth seen by the sea is more beautiful endeed: I had discovered Formentera some years ago by bicycle, but circumnavigate it by kayak allow to rouse angles of surprised beauty.
We land after 25 km that are almost night in the sandy beach among the flat and dark rocky coast of Es Calò, a village grown around the refuge of the fishermen boats: a beautiful sea shell waits me on the beach and falling stars crown our dinner!
Formentera has reserved us the first day of sun of the trip and has given us an unforgettable paddle.

Paddling between Ibiza and Formentera

Insieme alle discoteche, d'inverno ad Ibiza devono chiudere anche i ripetitori: in spiaggia non c'è quasi mai campo ed aggiornare il blog è ogni sera una scommessa.
Inoltre, il furto dell'attrezzatura per riprese e foto comincia a farsi sentire... anche se la connessione "sconnessa" non ci lascia pubblicare immagini!
Negli ultimi due giorni abbiamo scoperto due isole molto diverse!
Il 30 dicembre, pagaiando da Cala Benirras a Cala Salada, ci siamo goduti un lungo tratto di costa rocciosa, alta e inaccessibile, con scogliere rossastre che precipitano in mare da altezze ragguardevoli, completamente disabitate e ricoperte di pini d'Aleppo: faglie, pieghe e grotte dai tipici colori vulcanici e dalle forme curiose che fan correre la fantasia.

I promontori sono tutti pronunciati e caratteristici, con torrette di pietra, archi naturali e isolotti articolati, che creano giardini di roccia dove è molto divertente navigare: insomma, una lunga giornata di totale immersione nella natura incontaminata che ci lascia un gran bel ricordo.

Il 31, invece, ci attendono solo case e palazzi, alcuni ancora in costruzione nonostante la costituzione di riserve naturali e di zone protette; da Sant Antoni de Portmani a Cala d'Hort è tutto un fiorire di grattacieli, palazzacci e casupole di ogni tipo, foggia e colore, senza nessuna fantasia e con una certa sadica predilezione per il particolare brutto e vistoso.

Il tutto rigorosamente vista mare! Con l'ovvia conseguenza di deturpare irrimediabilmente l'intera costa! Ironizziamo per attenuare l'amarezza: lungo costa si incontrano prima uno splendido calanco incastonato tra condomini color pastello, poi una magnifica cala ridossata ad alberghi di sette piani, e poco oltre una indimenticabile spiaggia di fine sabbia dorata sormontata da case private con piscina...

Alla fine della giornata siamo talmente provati e delusi che ci scopriamo ad esultare tutti e tre in coro alla vista di alcuni casermoni appena costruiti e subito franati in mare per uno smottamento del terreno, causato forse dalle forti piogge o dalle potenti mareggiate... ci è sembrato che in qualche modo la Natura abbia ripreso il sopravvento sulla stupidità umana.

Per risollevarci un pò il morale, ci godiamo uno sbarco degno di nota sotto una pioggerella fine in una baia invasa dalla meduse rosse dai lunghi filamenti urticanti, l'orizzonte chiuso dal profilo imponente delle due isole magiche Es Vedrà e Es Vedranell, ricche di leggende antiche e recenti ed oggi riserva naturale per la presenza di capre selvatiche, di lucertole endemiche dal ventre celeste e del raro falco eleonora (che vi alleva i piccoli prima di migrare in Madagascar).

Franco cucina un cenone di Capodanno indimenticabile, imbandito sul tavolaccio di legno della baracca dei pescatori protetto da una provvidenziale tettoia di palme: tortellini, lenticchie, panettone artigianale della esatta misura del gavone rotondo ed un'ottima bottiglia di spumante italiano, il tutto consumato ben prima della mezzanotte, perchè alle otto siamo già cotti dal sonno. Una festa di fine anno degna del miglior Grand Hotel!!!

Together with the discos, in Ibiza must also close the repeaters at winter time: in the beaches the mobiles don't work and every evening is a bet to update the blog.

Besides, the theft of the equipment for videos and photo starts to be felt... even if the "disconnected" connection doesn't allow us to publish pictures!

In the last two days we have discovered two very different islands!

On December 30, paddling from Cala Benirras to Cala Salada, a long line of rocky, tall and inaccessible coast, with reddish bluffs that fall into the sea from notable heights, completely uninhabited and covered by Aleppo's Pine: faults, folds and caves from the typical volcanic colors and from the curious forms that fan to race the imagination.
The promontories are all pronounced and characteristic, with stone turrets, natural arcs and articulated islets, that create rocky gardens where is very amusing to paddling in: a long day of total immersion in the uncontaminated nature that allows us a big beautiful memory.
On December 31, instead, only houses and buildings, some of them still in construction despite the constitution of natural reserves and protected zones; from Sant Antoni de Portmani to Cala d'Hort there are everywhere skyscrapers, buildings and hotels of every type, manner and color, without any imagination and with a certain sadist predilection for the ugly and showy detail.
They are rigorously built ON the sea! With the obvious consequence to irremediably deface the whole coast! We try to be ironic to attenuate the bitterness: we meet a splendid "calanco" set among pastel color block of flats, a magnificent cove near a seven floors hotel and an unforgettable gilded sandy beach surmounted from private houses with swimming pool...
At the end of the day we are so disappointed that we exult in choir to the sight of some palaces just built and immediately slipped into the sea for a landslide of the ground, caused perhaps from the strong rains or from the powerful sa storm... somehow the Nature has taken back the upper hand on the human stupidity.
But finally we arrive in a bay invaded by the red jellyfishes by the long filaments, the horizon closed by the imposing profile of the two magic islands called Es Vedrà and Es Vedranell, rich of ancient and recent legends and now natural reserve for the presence of wild goats, of endemic lizards from the blue abdomen and of the rare hawk Eleonora (which raises there the chickes before migrating in Madagascar).
Franco cook an unforgettable dinner for the New Year's eve, prepared on the wooden table of the fishermen hut protected by a providential roofing of palm leaves: tortellini, lentils, panettone - of the exact measure of the round hacth - and a bottle of a good Italian sparkling wine... we consumed all before midnight, because at eight o'clock we are already "cooked" by the sleep.
A very good party!!!

Paddling around Ibiza

Sono due giorni che pagaiamo lungo una costa frastagliata e rocciosa, con poche spiagge sabbiose che quando sono più grandi di un lenzuolo hanno alle spalle il profilo incombente di un brutto albergo a quattro piani vista mare.
Il tempo ci assiste e con mare calmo e leggera brezza a favore rispettiamo le tappe giornaliere, campeggiando ieri a Cala d'en Serra e oggi a Cala Benirras, entrambe coronate da decine di scivoli in legno per tirare in secca i bei gozzi bianchi dei pescatori.
Escono puntuali tutte le sere e rientrano quando ormai è calata la notte, mentre noi cuciniamo intorno ai fornelli con le luci frontali accese sui piatti fumanti, mentre loro in barca, come fossero ancora pirati e contrabbandieri, lasciano tutte le loro luci rigorosamente spente.
Tanti cormorani sulla nostra rotta, con un bel ciuffetto sul capo che mandano su è giù come uno scandaglio ed una macchia gialla sotto gli occhi; gli esemplari che planano vicini ai nostri kayak mostrano anche le piume del collo dagli scuri riflessi verdognoli che richiamano i colori delle distese marine.
Qui i fondali sono profondi ma la posidonia contribuisce a mantenere l'acqua talmente limpida che sembra di poterli sfiorare con la punta della pagaia; i colori della roccia sono quelli tipici di un'isola vulcanica: ocra, rosso, nero, grigio e bianco, in una varietà che bene si sposa con il profilo movimentato della costa.
Pini d'Aleppo ovunque, con il loro bel manto verde chiaro pulito dalle recenti piogge; solo in un tratto, sul promontorio di Cala Xarranca, un brutto incendio ha mangiato ettari di bosco, lasciando chissà come intatte le due ville bianche che ancora campeggiano tra gli scheletri anneriti degli alberi.
L'umidità di ieri notte ha reso difficile e lento l'imbarco mattutino e solo alle 11,30 siamo entrati in acqua, complice anche la sveglia delle 6,00 che non ha suonato in nessuno dei tre telefoni attivati.
Siccome la tappa di domani si preannuncia lunga e senza sbarchi per la sosta del pranzo, speriamo di essere più arzilli nonostante le abbondanti libagioni e la ricca cantina di bordo: il nocino ha avuto il solito successo e stasera Franco ci ha deliziati con una "tisana" di liquirizia corretta al miele!
Sarà un'altra notte da sogno...
Per le foto, bisognerà prima rimettere in carica il computer, che oggi ha già scaricato i filmati di "teschiocamera e manocamera", che hanno lavorato quasi senza sosta sotto Punta des Moscarter, sulla quale si staglia il profilo inconfondibile di un faro a fasce oblique bianche e nere tanto alto e sottile come mai ci era capitato di incontrare...

We're paddling for two days along a jagged and rocky coast, with few sandy beaches: when they are greater than a sheet they the incumbent profile of an ugly hotel.
The weather is good and with calm sea and light breeze we're respecting the daily plane, stopping in Cala d'en Serra yesterday and today in Cala Benirràs, both crowned by about ten wooden slides used by local fishermen for their beautiful white gullets. They go punctually out every evening and reenter at night, when we're cooking around the stoves with the frontal lights turned on on the smoking dishes, while them rigorously switch the lights off on their boats, as they were still pirates and smugglers.
So many sea crows on our rout, with a beautiful tuft on the head that they use up and down like a sounder, a yellow stain under the eyes and the dark feathers of the neck reflected the colors of the sea.
Here the backdrops are deep but the posidonia contributes to maintain the so clear water that seems to be able to graze them with the point of the paddle; the colors of the rock are those typical of a volcanic island: ochre, red, black, grey and white, in a variety that well it marries the animated profile of the coast. Aleppo's Pine anywhere, with their beautiful green mantle cleaned by the recent rains; just in a place, on the promontory of Cove Xarranca, an ugly fire has eaten hectares of wood, leaving intact the two white villas that camp still among the skeletons blackened of the trees. Yesterday's damp night has made the early-morning embarkation difficult and slow and only at 11,30 o'clock we have entered the kayaks on the water, accomplice also the 6,00 alarm clock that has not played in none of the three activated telephones.
As the tomorrow paddle is preannounced long and without unloadings place for the lunch time, we hope to be more lively than today, despite the abundant libations and the rich wine cellar: the "nocino" has been successful and tonight Franco has delighted us with a licorice "tisana" corrected with honey! It will be another dream night...
For the photos, it will necessary to recahrge again the computer, that today has unloaded the tapes that have worked under Punta des Moscarter, with the unmistakable profile of a lighthouse with oblique white and black bands, so much tall and thin we never seen before...

First day in Ibiza

La lunga ed avventurosa trasferta a Barcellona si è conclusa al Commissariato di Polizia del Porto Vecchio: mentre caricavamo i kayak intorno all'auto coi quattro sportelli aperti, un mago ha sottratto a Mauro il borsello. Un danno pari ai nostri due stipendi mensili ed una serie pressocchè infinita di formalità burocratiche da sbrigare in meno di due ore, prima di perdere il traghetto per Ibiza: denuncia, blocco del telefono, del bancomat, della carta di credito e della chiave dell'auto.
Senza biglietti, documenti, telecamera, fotocamera, cellulare, occhiali e porta-cicche delle sigarette, corriamo contro il tempo per imbarcare i kayak, ma gli eventi sembrano congiurare ancora contro di noi: Franco rompe il suo carrellino e noi dimentichiamo una serie di cose...
Quando siamo finalmente sul molo con tutta la nostra rabbia perfettamente stivata, ci bloccano ancora: vogliono i biglietti anche per i tre kayak!!!

Riusciamo a salire sul traghetto mentre suonano le sirene della chiusura dei portelli e stramazziamo sul tappeto soffice e pulito del ponte n.6.
Ci risvegliamo la mattina seguente nel porto di Eivissa: brina sulle auto spessa un dito, freddo polare e vento gelido...
Dopo una lussuosa tripla colazione in un caffè dall'arredo marinaro scurito dal fumo delle sigarette degli avventori, sbrighiamo le ultime incombenze burocratiche.
Quando all'ora di pranzo troviamo uno scivolo adatto per dare inizio al periplo, il sole alto ha scaldato l'aria e la brezza leggera da SW ha pulito il cielo...
Forse abbiamo penato abbastanza e tutto ora volgerà al meglio: siamo finalmente in kayak, liberi in mare e lontani dai ladri!!!
La veloce pagaiata giornaliera ci stampa di nuovo il sorriso sul viso e col mare a favore filiamo lungo costa fino alla tappa prevista per lo sbarco.
Una notte stellata ricopre le nostre tende su Cala Boix (scopritelo sulla mappa) ed una potente risacca ci culla la ninna nanna...

The long adventurous journey to Barcellona is finished to the Police station: while we were loading the kayaks around the car, a magic thief has subtracted Mauro's backpack.
So we have had an endless series of bureaucratic formality to be hurried in less than two hours, before risk to lose the ferry to Ibiza: denunciation, blockade of the telephone, of the credit cards and of the key car.
Without tickets, documents, videocamera, phtocamera, mobile phone, glasses and some more things, we raced against the time to embark the kayaks, but the events seem to conspire against us: Franco breaks his kayak trailer and we forget a lot of equipment...
When we were finally on the dock with all of our anger perfectly stowed, they still stopped us: they also wanted the tickets for the three kayaks!!!
ARGH @ §% &!£ &?)*(/@% §!!!!!!!!!
We succeed to catch the ferry while they are playing the sirens to close the portholes and we immediately knocked down on the soft and clean carpet of the deck number 6.
We wake up the following morning in the Eivissa horbour: frosts on the cars, icy wind and polar weather...
After a luxurious triple breakfast in a tipical "cafeteria" where it is already possibile to smoke, we hurry the last bureaucratic duties and when we find a place to launch the kayaks, the sun is heating the air and the SW light breeze is absterging the sky...
Perhaps we've suffered enough and hourly ALL will turn to the best: let's be finally into the kayak, free on the sea and distant from the thieves!!!
The high-speed daily paddle put again a big smile on our faces and we finally arrive to Cala Boix (discover it on the map): a starry night covers our tents and a powerful breaking waves sing us a ninna-nanna song...

Christmas night

Siamo partiti e siamo arrivati!
Solo fino a casa di Franco, nostra prima tappa nella lunga trasferta verso Barcellona.
Tempo da lupi, acqua battente sulle risaie piemontesi e fino al mare ligure, ma zero traffico: sono già tutti intorno all'abero di Natale per scartare i regali.
Io mi sono portata dietro il mio primo (e per ora unico!) regalo ricevuto: una azzeccatissima coperta con le maniche, lunga fino ai piedi e con le aperture per le mani: leggere, scrivere e bere un te caldo non sarà più un problema, per chi come me batte sempre i denti dal freddo...
L'ospitalità di Franco, uomo di frontiera aperto alle contaminazioni, è davvero calorosa: cena frugale al posto del gran cenone, carte nautiche al posto delle carte da regalo, sacchi a pelo in terra per una notte di Natale perfetta... ormai siamo in viaggio!

We've started and we've arrived!
Just as far as Franco's house, our first stop in our displacement to Barcelona.
Bad weather, strong rain on the rise fields in Piemonte and near the sea in Liguria, no traffic: all the people are ready to unwrap the gifts under the Christmas tree.
I've brought along my first (and unique) Christmas present: a perfect long-sleeves quilt for a toasty reading, writing and drinking time...
Franco realizes a welcoming atmosfere, he's a border man open to contaminations and our Christmas night is anything but formal: a supper in place of Christmas dinner, a sea chart in place of wrapping papers and an excited sleeping bag night: we're definitely on a trip!

Christmas season

Finisce sempre così: per quanto ci sforziamo di preparare tutto con un certo anticipo, l'ultimo giorno si accumulano talmente tante cose da fare che vorremo rinviare la partenza!
C'è una teoria scientifica sui "procrastinatori" che forse si addice bene ai nostri progetti nautici perchè pensiamo (e speriamo) di avere sempre un altro pò di tempo il giorno successivo per terminare quel che abbiamo lasciato in sospeso il giorno precedente... però poi tutto si sistema magicamente e noi siamo finalmente in viaggio.
Partiamo domani: tappa prima a Ventimiglia per "prelevare" Franco e poi a Monaco per visitare la mostra fotografica di Alain&Nathalie Antognelli sui loro recenti viaggi in kayak in Groenlandia: un modo insolito per festeggiare il Natale ma decisamente beneaugurale.

It always happens this way: when we try to prepare everything in advance, there are so many things to be done on the last day that we would want to postpone the departure! There is a scientific theory about the "procrastinators" that maybe is correct for our nautical projects because we always think (and hope) to have a bit more time the day after, to finish what we have not done the day before... however, everything magically goes on and we finally can start the journey.
We leave tomorrow: stop first in Ventimiglia to meet Franco and then in Monaco to see the exposition realized by Alain&Nathalie Antognelli about their recent sea kayak expeditions to Greenland: an unusual way to celebrate the Christmas day.

Bene, siamo quasi pronti!
Abbiamo sistemato tutta l'attrezzatura, controllato più volte la lista, acquistato le ultime cose, gonfiato le ruote del carrellino porta kayak e fatte tutte le telefonate di auguri a parenti ed amici!
Stiamo ancora prendendo appunti sulle carte nautiche perchè nel frattempo sono arrivate altre guide turistiche dalla biblioteca comunale e qualcuna è più aggiornata di altre: pagaieremo in senso antiorario lungo Ibiza ed in senso orario lungo Formentera, incontreremo un paio di tratti rocciosi di qualche decina di chilometri dove non sarà possibile sbarcare ed avremo un solo giorno di riserva... le guide parlano di 300 giorni di sole all'anno sulle Isole Baleari e le temperature medie sono decisamente più alte di quelle Lombarde, anzi la minima ibizenca è più alta della massima milanese!
Quindi "scendendo" a sud troveremo s-i-c-u-r-a-m-e-n-t-e bel tempo!

We've organized the equipment, checked one more times the list, bought the last things, inflated the wheels of the sea kayak hand dolly and phoned to family and friends for Christmas greetings! We're still taking notes on the nautical maps because in the meantime have arrived more guides from the pubblic library: we will paddle in anti-clockwise around Ibiza and in clockwise around Formentera, will meet a pair of rocky coastline where landing is impossible and will have just one day free... the touristic guides talk about 300 sunny days a year on the Balearic Islands and the season temperatures are warmer than here in Northern Italy, better the lowest in Ibiza is higher than the maximum in Milan!
So, "going down" to the south we will c-e-r-t-a-i-n-l-y find good weather!

Count, weigh, stow...

Siamo arrivati a preparare la cambusa e sono giorni che sistemiamo, pesiamo, dividiamo, imbustiamo e stiviamo tutto l'occorrente per affrontare il viaggio invernale con razioni sufficienti di cibo e bevande.
Colazione: latte, caffè, biscotti, miele, marmellata (quella fatta dalla mia mamma!), muesli e pane (fresco se troveremo i mercati aperti), succhi di frutta e acqua fresca.
Pranzo: sgrombri, tonno e sardine con contorno di verdure, tutto rigorosamente in scatola ma condito con olio di oliva di frantoio e condimenti della cucina mediterranea.
Cena: maltagliati (sempre tirati a mano dalla mia mamma), pastina e cous cous con minestrone, verdure e sughi pronti... dessert di frutta secca e biscottini al vino (questi li preparo io prima del viaggio per dare fondo alle scorte di farina, zucchero e vino) ed irrinunciabile bicchierino della staffa dalla fornitissima cantina sociale: nocino, liquore di liquirizia, grappa aromatizzata e prodotti tipici locali (Ibiza è famosa per la produzione di liquori a base di erbe come Hierbas, Rumaniseta e La frigola!).
Certamente, neanche stavolta riusciremo a perdere peso...

In the last days we finally arrive to the organize the "galley": count, weigh, divide and stow food and drink that we need for the 2 weeks winter trip.
Breakfast: milk, coffee, biscuits, honey, jam (hand made by my mother!), muesli and bread (fresh from the market, if we will find it open), fruit juices and fresh water.
Lunch: tuna and sardines with vegetables, with olive oil and more from the mediterranean cuisine.
Dinner: maltagliati (a kind of pasta, hand made again by my mother) and cous cous with minestrone, vegetables and tomato sauces... dessert with dried fruit and "biscottini" (those made by myself with the last flour, sugar and wine we have at home) and above all a special glass of nocino, licorice's liqueur, spicy grappa and local typical products (Ibiza is famous for the production of liqueurs based on herbs like Hierbas, Rumaniseta and La Frigola!).
We're sure that neither this time we will lose weight...

Remodeled winter tent

"Cara, ho bisogno di te..."
Mauro non è mai così romantico, e così mi affretto a rispondere: "Eccomi!"
"... per rimettere i tiranti negli anelli della tenda" - "Ah, ecco"
Abbiamo applicato delle giunte laterali alla nostra tenda invernale a tunnel, per farla arrivare sino a terra ed evitare quei fastidiosi spifferi che alle Isole Eolie qualche inverno fa si insinuavano dappertutto e ci avevano riempito materassini e sacchi a pelo di nera sabbia lavica.
Mauro ha passato un'intera giornata a tagliare i pezzi per la sarta, togliendo anelli, fettucce, tiranti ed ogni altro orpello che potesse intralciare il certosino lavoro artigianale... Oggi finalmente abbiamo riportato a casa la tenda e negli spazi ristretti del nostro mini-soggiorno abbiamo trascorso buona parte della serata per rimettere ogni pezzo al suo posto: siamo quasi pronti per dormirci dentro!
E poi c'è ancora qualcuno che si sorprende che non vediamo mai la televisione: anche se funzionasse quella che abbiamo, non avremmo mai il tempo per guardarla...

We've added a lateral side to our winter tunnel tent, to best protect the inside and avoid those annoying drafts that crepted everywhere in the Aeolian Islands some winters ago: we have had camp mattresses and sleeping bags filled of black lava sand.
Mauro spent a whole day to cut the pieces for the seamstress, to remove rings, straps, rods or any other tinsel that could interfere with the meticulous handycraft...
Today we finally withdrawn the tent and in the our mini-dining-room we spent a good part of the evening to put each pieces in its place, and now we are almost ready to sleep in it!
There are still people surprised that we never watch TV at home: that we have doesn't work anymore, but we never have the time to watch it...

Pinwheel and stickers

In una sabato di sole, il primo dopo due lunghi mesi di vento, pioggia e persino neve, siamo usciti sul Lago Maggiore per apportare le ultime migliorie al kayak e all'attrezzatura: sistemate le nuove pagaie divisibili sotto gli elastici del ponte anteriore, messe in sicurezza le bottiglie d'acqua nel pozzetto con qualche accorgimento elementare, disposte le sacche stagne nei vari gavoni per avere un'idea di massima della capacità di carico del nuovo Baidarka (ben superiore a quella del vecchio Sardinia - YUPPY!), ci siamo dedicati ad una meritata lenta silenziosa pagaiata verso le Isole Borromee...
Con la girandola colorata a poppa e gli adesivi degli sponsor dappertutto sullo scafo, il mio nuovo kayak sembra vestito a festa e mi mette allegria.
Ho giocato un pò con gli accostamenti cromatici e ho fatto delle scoperte interessanti: la pagaia divisibile verde ha la stessa tonalità Kokatat, quella rossa si sposa bene con il logo della CS Canoe, il marchio Avatak ricomprende i tre colori nazionali e fa il paio con la bandiera sfilacciata che Mauro monta sempre a poppa, l'omino di Kayak Rescue occhieggia dal ponte e ci ricorda che nessun danno sarà mai troppo grave per le mani esperte di Andrea, i colori degli stemmi di Sullacqua, CKF e CCM creano un girotondo simpatico che ben rappresenta la fantasia canoistica nella scelta del simbolo per il proprio club...
Bene, il bagno di sole comincia a far sentire i suoi effetti: la mia follia kayakkera sta prendendo il largo, in perfetta sincronia con l'avvicinarsi della partenza per Ibiza&Formentera!

In a sunny day, the first Saturday after two long windy, rainy and even snowy months, we went out to test again kayak and gear: place the new spare paddles on the front deck, put the water bottles into the cockpit, stow the dry bags in the hatches to have a rough idea of the loading capacity of my new Baidarka (a lot superior compared with the old Sardinia - YUPPY!), we devoted ourselves to a silent slow deserved paddling around the Borromean Islands on Verbano Lake...
With the coloured pinwheel on the stern and all that sponsor's stickers, my new kayak seems dressed up and makes me really very happy. I played a bit with the colour combinations and I made some interesting discoveries: the green spare paddle has the same color of the Kokatat logo, the red spare paddle goes well with the CS Canoe logo, the Avatak logo covers the three colors of the Italian flag as well as the little one that Mauro take on his stern, the man of the Kayak Rescue reminds us that no damage will ever be too serious for the experienced Andrew's hands, the colours of the Sullacqua, CKF and CCM create a nice circle that well represents the kayaker's fantasy to choice their club's symbol... Well, the sunbath begins to feel its effects: my "kayak madness" is taking off in perfect sync with the approaching departure to Ibiza&Formentera!

Come sempre prima di abbandonarci al piacere della navigazione in mare aperto, nei giorni precedenti il viaggio ci dedichiamo alla ricerca di letture a tema che abbiano una qualche attinenza con la meta prescelta.
Dopo avere spulciato tutte le guide turistiche disponibili alla biblioteca comunale, abbiamo scoperto che anche le Isole Baleari si sono macchiate di sangue italiano durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale: al largo di Ibiza è stata affondata dopo l'armistizio dell'8 settembre 1943 la nave militare Roma con 2000 uomini a bordo e le poche decine di superstiti sono stati a lungo trattenuti sull'isola e quasi dimenticati nel corso delle estenuanti trattative post belliche tra Spagna, Italia e Stati Uniti.
Non avendo voglia di addentrarmi nella lettura di questa ennesima tragedia guerraiola e ho preferito un romanzo storico: "Come una pietra che rotola" di Maria Barbal, un racconto appassionante ambientato durante la guerra civile spagnola racconta con dolcezza la parabola esistenziale di una donna forte che combatte contro pregiudizi e false verità... letto d'un fiato in un'unica serata.
In attesa che arrivino gli altri libri ordinati ieri, assaporiamo il piacere di iniziare il viaggio nelle terre catalane, un viaggio prima del viaggio: con la lettura il piacere della scoperta comincia prima e dura più a lungo!

A good lecture for the trip: "Pedra de tartera", written by Maria Barbal and pubblished in Italy by MarcosyMarcos, is a really good book to start the trip in advance, waiting for the others we've ordered yesterday.
Not only tourist guides, courtesy collected from the pubblic library, but also historical novel to better understand the Catalan land and to prefigure the pleasure of the sea kayak trip...

Ecco le nuove pagaie divisibili della Avatak, due Nuuk realizzate da Niko con la solita maestria, con uno speciale trattamento di impermeabilizzazione e con due originali custodie in stoffa. Rossa per Mauro, verde acqua per me, una perfetta combinazione cromatica con quelle di Creta. Come quelle, anche queste sono "dedicate" al viaggio invernale a Ibiza&Formentera.

Siamo diventati tre: Franco Bruno verrà con noi in viaggio a Ibiza&Formentera, facendo lievitare la coppia e nobilitandola a vero e proprio "sea kayak team"... con lui nel gruppo sarà davvero una gran bella avventura!
Kayaker di provata esperienza, Franco in luglio ha avuto un brutto incidente in montagna mentre si dedicava all'altra sua grande passione, lo sci alpinismo; dopo oltre 40 giorni di trazione e più di 2 mesi di convalescenza ed altrettanti di terapia, è finalmente tornato in kayak e ha sfoggiato una forma smagliante già al Wiskie del 4-5 dicembre 2010.
Potremmo così contare sulla sua competenza e simpatia per trascorrere in allegria il periodo natalizio, naturalmente in kayak!

Now we're three: with Franco Bruno in the team we have a great number for a great adventure!
Franco is an experienced kayaker and he's coming out of a frustrating period of convalescence because of a mountain accident occurred last July while he was skiing; after more than 4 months, he's finally paddling again and he was in the pink also during the last Wiskie winter meeting.
With his competence and cheerfulness we will surely have a good Christmas time!

L'ultimo raduno invernale in Liguria ci ha offerto l'occasione per testare sia il nuovo kayak che la strepitosa nuova attrezzatura, con risultati che definire soddisfacenti è ampiamente riduttivo.
La muta stagna Kokatat è notoriamente uno dei migliori prodotti sul mercato e resiste anche alle condizioni climatiche più proibitive; certo il Tirreno non è il Polo, ma adesso possiamo uscire, sperimentare ed osare tutto l'anno, inverno compreso (tanto più che in questo dannato Nord Italia, non mancano mai giornate fredde, piovose, nevose, nebbiose e grigie!!!).
Le pagaie Avatak sono ormai delle fedeli compagne di viaggio, anche ora che il buon Niko ha deciso di passare la mano a Sergio, altra grande talento nella lavorazione artigianale del legno: così le due divisibili cromaticamente gemelle delle Nuuk di Creta campeggeranno sui ponti anteriori dei nostri kayak, due colorate pagaie di scorta per affrontare in sicurezza il viaggio invernale alle Isole Baleari.
Il Baidarka della CSCanoe, poi, riesce a farmi appassionare ancor di più al kayak da mare e a fine escursione non avevo punto voglia di scendere a terra: il sedile "generoso" e comodo, la pedaliera a tavoletta molto riposante, la deriva in caso di estremo bisogno, il terzo gavone più largo, il pozzetto più grande e tutto il ponte più basso di 2 cm rendono il kayak quanto di più vicino alla perfezione io abbia sinora sperimentato.
Persino Mauro, molto più restio di me a lasciarsi travolgere dall'entusiasmo, sembra soddisfatto del nuovo nato e si è persino lasciato scappare un "bello, è davvero un bel kayak"!
Insomma, possiamo affrontare il viaggio invernale alle Isole Baleari in grande stile e siamo già sulle spine per la mini crociera che ci condurrà da Barcellona al porto di Ibiza: sull'isola, se avremo sufficiente fortuna, con un pò d'onda e qualche raffica di vento, troveremo le condizioni ideali per fare una prova generale coi fiocchi!

Anche gli amici del Canoa Club Milano hanno scelto di sostenere e seguire il nostro viaggio invernale alle Isole Baleari.
Lo storico club milanese è da oltre 50 anni un riferimento attivo sul territorio lombardo per tutte le attività legate alla canoa e si è dedicato con frequenza crescente alla pratica del kayak da mare nel corso degli ultimi anni, organizzando diverse escursioni con i propri soci per traghettare dal loro ambiente naturale, l'acqua dolce dei fiumi e dei laghi del nord, a quello meno congeniale ma altrettanto emozionante dell'acqua salata del mare.

Also the friends of the Milan Canoa Club has chosen to sustain and follow our winter trip to the Balearic Islands.
The historical club is more than 50 years old and it is an important reference in Italy for canoe&kayak activities; they are increasing the sea kayak practice along the last years, organizing sea excursions to combine their natural environment, the sweet white water (of the rivers and the lakes in the north), to the salty water of the sea.
We hope to maintain a good cooperation with this illustrious association, animated by some curious characters that we usually meet in their comfortable center for the Inuit Cineforum or on Thursday evenings in the swimming pool for the winter training...

Non poteva mancare nella rosa di associazioni che sostengono e seguono il nostro viaggio invernale alle Isole Baleari la "nostra" amata Sullacqua, composita e colorata associazione lombarda con una sede frequentatissima e strategicamente affacciata sul bel Lago di Lugano, che dalle sponde del paesino di confine di Lavena - Ponte Tresa fa l'occhiolino allo svizzero Canton Ticino.
Corsi per adulti e bambini, escursioni tutto l'anno, attività sociali, serate ed incontri: tante le attività promosse da Sullacqua, che ora segue via rete il viaggio di due dei suoi numerosi iscritti...

Abbiamo ricevuto ieri la conferma della sponsorizzazione Kokatat per il nostro prossimo viaggio invernale ad Ibiza & Formentera!

Ci è infatti stato recapitato un pacco spedito qualche giorno prima da Arcata - California e contenente tutto quanto un kayaker ha sempre desiderato come dotazione invernale: mute stagne, sotto mute, paraspruzzi, giubbotti, storm cags, calzari e moffole per entrambi, oltre ad adesivi e gadgets in previsione del nuovo viaggio estivo a Maiorca.

Kayak Rescue support

Come per il viaggio a Creta e a Lefkada, anche stavolta Andrea Bolis si è subito dichiarato disponibile a sostenere il nostro prossimo viaggio invernale.
Qualche giorno fa gli abbiamo consegnato il Sardinia per i necessari lavori di restauro, dopo il taglio nello scafo seguito allo sbarco a Matala del 18 agosto 2010.
Speriamo di rientrare da Ibiza&Formentera senza danni.
Andrea ha sempre rimesso a nuovo i nostri kayak e sappiamo di poterli affidare a mani esperte...

As well as for Crete and for Lefkada sea kayak tours, Kayak Rescue supoort us also for our next winter tour to Ibiza and Formentera Islands.
Yesterday we've entrusted him the Sardinia to rescue the hull (and the hole) near the cockpitowing by a surf landing in Matala in the past 18th of August 2010.
We hope to complete the Ibiza&Formentera sea kayak tour without any damage.
Anyway, Andrea has always done a good job and we're completely sure about his competent sea kayak rescue...

Non è facile raggiungere le Baleari d'inverno: c'è un solo traghetto disponibile!
Abbiamo quindi prenotato l'andata ed il ritorno senza auto al seguito con i seguenti orari:
Barcellona - Ibiza : domenica 26.12.2010 - ore 22.30
Ibiza - Barcellona: venerdì 7.1.2011 - ore 00.30
Le due isole hanno complessivamente uno sviluppo costiero di circa 300 km (210 km Ibiza, 82 km Formentera, poco più di 4km lo stretto che le separa); avendo a disposizione 11 giorni di navigazione, dovremmo pagaiare per almeno 25-30 km al giorno: sveglia alle 7, pausa pranzo veloce e sbarco non oltre le 15,30 perchè farà buio presto... un breve viaggio invernale alla scoperta delle Isole Baleari minori.
Qualcuno vuole unirsi all'allegra brigata?!?

It is not easy to reach the Balearic Islands in winter time: there is just one ferry available!
We've already booked the tickets on the following dates:
Barcelona - Ibiza: Sunday 26th of December 2010 - times 22.30
Ibiza - Barcelona: Friday 7th of January 2011 - times 00.30
The two islands have a coastal lenght of around 162 n.m.(113 n.m. Ibiza, 44 n.m. Formentera, about 2 n.m. to cross); having 11 days avilable, we would paddle for at least 13-16 n.m per day: so, wake up at 7 o'clock, short break for lunch and land before 3 o'clock p.m., because the dark will arrive soon... a brief winter trip to discover the two smaller Balearic Islands.
Does anyone want to come with us?!?

Ibiza and Formentera kayak tour 2010

Ibiza e Formentera sono le due minori delle Isole Baleari, con 300 km circa di sviluppo costiero complessivo: dopo aver completato il periplo di Minorca nell’inverno 2009 ed aver programmato quello di Maiorca nell’estate 2011, contiamo così di scoprire in kayak l’intero arcipelago spagnolo.
Belle spiagge sabbiose e alte scogliere rocciose, Ibiza e Formentera sono famose per la loro vita notturna ma hanno anche una affascinante storia di conquiste e dominazioni, una variegata ricchezza naturale ed un clima mite tutto l’anno, con le temperature mitigate dalla presenza costante di una forte brezza marina.
Isole catalane poco distanti dalle coste spagnole, Ibiza e Formentera presentano una costa frastagliata; in campeggio nautico, viaggeremo dotati dell’attrezzatura necessaria per affrontare in sicurezza la navigazione costiera, stivando nei gavoni stagni dei kayak tutto l’occorrente per un viaggio in autonomia, condotto nel pieno rispetto dell’ambiente naturale.
Zigzagando in kayak lungo le loro coste, mantenendo un’andatura turistica di circa 25-30 km al giorno, in ragione delle condizioni meteo marine, approfitteremo dello sguardo privilegiato dal kayak per raccogliere nuovo materiale video fotografico.
Attraverso questo blog dedicato, attivo con qualche mese di anticipo sulla partenza, sarà possibile seguire in tempo reale i lavori di preparazione e le varie tappe del viaggio, per condividere l’esperienza di una nuova avventura in kayak da mare.

Ibiza and Formentera are the smallest of the Balearic Islands with their coastline of over 150 n. m.: we want to explore by kayak all the islands of the Spanish archipelago, after having done the circumnavigation of Minorca in December 2009 and having planned the periplus of Maiorca next August 2011.
Beautiful beaches and rocky cliffs are as famous as night raves in Ibiza and Formentera, but the Pityuses Islands have also an interesting history, a rich nature and a mild climate, where temperatures are mitigated by the constant presence of a strong breeze from the north.
Islands with a craggy coastline, Ibiza and Formentera are just off the Spanish mainland; we will paddle around the islands, will stow the necessary equipment for a safe and self-sufficient expedition in the watertight hatches, as well as tents and stove on deck, to conduct the voyage in complete respect for the natural environment.
Zig-zaging in kayak to complete the perimeter in about 2 weeks with easy stretches of around 10-15 miles a day, we will paddle according to the weather conditions and making the most of the scenery only available to kayakers, we will accumulate new video and photographic material.
A dedicated blog is already running where you can follow the progress of the sea kayak trip of the circumnavigation of Ibiza and Formentera in more or less real time and share the experience of our latest sea kayak adventure.
